SSL Certificates are small data files that digitally encrypt the communication between two systems, preventing any 'unintended for' recipients from reading and modifying the information that is submitted. SSL [ Secure Sockets Layer ] and TLS [ Transport Layer Security ] are both cryptographic protocols that provide authentication and data encryption between servers, machines, and applications operating over a network.

SSL was the original protocol [ it is now deprecated ]. TLS is the most recent one. All encryption certificates issued by any reputable CA [ Certificate Authority ] are nowadays using the TLS protocol The SSL 'label' is still there as is the most recognizable TLA [ three letter acronym ] used in conjunction with these products and to avoid confusion. SSL Certificates can be issued under various encryption algorithms [ known as DES/3DES, AES and RSA ] and with various key strengths [ 128 to 4096 bit length ] The most used 'combination' is RSA 2048 bit length.

there are 3 types of ssl tls certificates

single :
for one domain or one subdomain under one extension only.
i.e. : mybusiness.com or shop.mybusiness.com

wildcard :

i.e. : *.mybusiness.com shop.mybusiness.com tech.mybusiness.com chat.mybusiness.com etc.

san [ subject alternative name ]
one certificate for complex setups that comes in 3 variation :

[ a ] : basic sanfor any domain under any extension [ up to 250 of them ]
i.e. : mybusiness.com mybusiness.net ourbusiness.us anybusiness.ca etc.

[ b ] : wildcard san
for any domain under any extension and anything you want, one level bellow under the main domain[s] [ up to 250 of them ]
i.e. : *.mybusiness.com *.mybusiness.net *.ourbusiness.us *.anybusiness.ca
and
shop.mybusiness.com tech.mybusiness.net shop.ourbusiness.us tech.anybusiness.ca etc.

[ c ] : flex san
the two san types above in one. the limit for this and all other types of san certificates is 250 domains/subdomains

a domain name could be : 'mybusiness' 'ourbusiness' 'anybusiness' etc.
a sub domain name could be : 'shop.mybusiness' 'tech.ourbusiness' 'chat.anybusiness' etc.
an extension could be : 'com' 'net' 'us' 'ca' etc.

there are 3 levels of domain and/or organiztion validation

DV | OV | EV

DV : DOMAIN VALIDATION
Ownership of the domain has to be ascertained.
A request for confirmation would be sent to the e-mail address listed on your domain name WHOIS record as the registrant' contact e-mail address.

OV : ORGANIZATION VALIDATION
Basic proof of an entity existence has to be ascertained by the CA.
In addition to the step above [ domain validation ], the CA [ the entity who will issue the certificate ] will verify the existence of a record of your business on any available public databases. Those would be for example, the national business registration authority, any business listing directory, Dun & Bradstreet etc.

EV : EXTENDED VALIDATION
Extended proof of an entity existence has to be ascertained by the CA and submitted by YOU to the CA for review.
In addition to the steps above [ domain validation and organization validation ], YOU will also have to submit to the CA [ the entity who will issue your certificate ] a number of documents that will confirm your business existence such us the business certificate of registration, copy of tax returns, utility bills etc.

Note : The stages outlined above are not an exhaustive list of all the steps that may be required for your organization to get validated. Organizations are assessed on a case by case basis by the CA [ Certificate Authority ]. Sectigo™, Entrust™, DigiCert™ and so on are CAs.

SSL Certificates installation is a technicaly complex process, therefore, our Installation Service [ although optional, strongly recommended ] is FREE and here to ensure that your new certificate gets installed correctly across a wide variety of server types and platforms. Please note that this offer is available for a new purchase aswel as for certificate renewalls, as long as the certificates were provided/purchased by/from us.
